As residents of Monterey, we all know the sometimes torrential rains that really hammer our houses. If your basement or crawl space tends to become a half-bath, you might want to look into an old standby, the sump pump. Picking out the right one, though, can feel like trying to select a cereal at a breakfast buffet—there are so many options, and you're not that sure which one is the best fit for you. There's the pedestal pump, standing tall above the might and main, easy to maintain but definitely a little noisy when it gets going. Then there is the submersible pump, which, as the name implies, goes right into the action but does not call attention to itself with height or, for that matter, noise. Each has its charms, and I can't really advocate for one over the other, so I will segue, with no disrespect to either, into my next topic.
Consider your home's particular character and needs. Some houses like to talk; they need a robust, high-capacity pump that can take care of business. Others, serene and isolated, can get by with a pump that just barely meets their needs. Think about the available space. A sloping lot with no room for a backup or a pedestal pump is a lot less serene than a living room where a feature wall can accommodate a stylish, high-efficiency, whole-home-protection beast. A store at the corner of Freed and Keyser has pumps that can do everything up to sound and look like the good old days. Remember, your choice colors this part of your living so you can peaceably weather whatever Monterey's rain gods may hurl your way.
Don't overlook the little extras before making your decision. Do you place a high value on having a backup plan? Or are you a techie who loves talking about battery backups? A rainy day pumping strategy can be nearly as useless as a paper umbrella when the power goes out, and the options for quick but effective plumbing solutions that keep you from having to wade through your favorite room are, shall we say, few and far between. That's what we're here to help with—every tale, puzzle, and potential solution for when your home's plumbing just isn't.
